The Kansas
African American Museum and Cultural Center
A new space dedicated to preserving, sharing, and celebrating the Kansas African American experience.
Project Overview

The Kansas African American Museum has outgrown its historic home. As programs and participation continue to grow, the need for expanded space and improved collection protection has become essential.
The Museum and Cultural Center at 201 North Main Street, formerly the Sunflower Bank building, is being renovated to meet these needs. The new facility will provide modern exhibition spaces, expanded educational areas, and improved preservation environments for TKAAM’s collections.
Since publicly announcing the campaign during its 25th anniversary, TKAAM has raised more than $6.4 million in gifts and pledges in support of this effort.

Construction Progress
Phase 1A Construction Highlights / December 2025
Phase 1A focused on preparing the building for long-term use through major structural, systems, and infrastructure improvements. Work completed includes structural modifications to support a future elevator, replacement of roof systems, and extensive below-grade concrete and waterproofing work to protect the building envelope.
Designing the Museum and Cultural Center
Architectural renderings show the transformation of 201 North Main into a visible and welcoming Museum and Cultural Center. The design supports TKAAM’s mission by balancing the preservation of history with the needs of modern education and engagement.
